Greater Houston Soap Box Derby would like to introduce you to National Super Kids, a nationwide program to promote Soap Box Derby racing for children with disabilities. Houston’s National Super Kids races are held in conjunction with our local Soap Box Derby races. All race events take place at the new Hockley Derby Park. What is a Super Kids Car?

Steve Radack, has constructed eight Super Kids cars for use in Houston’s
races. These are specially built two-seat, dual-control Derby cars. The
cars can be raced by multiple sets of drivers during each event, providing
all Super Kids with the experience of the thrill of the hill. How does it work? A Super Kid, along with an experienced Derby driver, competes against other Super Kids in an elimination format the same as our other Derby divisions. Each car has dual steering controls and a brake that either driver can control. Cars race down the hill powered by gravity and the combined abilities of the two-driver team. The emphasis is on participation and the thrill of accomplishment. Who is eligible and what is required? All children with disabilities who are between the ages of 7 and 17 and weigh less than 150 pounds are eligible to compete. This is a family activity. As such, one parent or family friend needs to be at the top of the hill to assist the child while he/she waits for his/her turn and to help the child get into the Derby car. One parent/family friend also needs to be at the bottom of the hill to get the child out of the Derby car and loaded in a truck that will take him/her back up the hill for the next race. Race volunteers are also available to assist the families with their Super Kid. Awards!!! Trophies are given to the top eight places and participation ribbons to all competitors. Each year we crown a Houston Super Kids Champion, who then becomes eligible to compete in the annual National Super Kids Championship Race held each July at the world-famous All-American Soap Box Derby hill in Akron, Ohio. |
